ADC HEAD FARM MANAGER I

The Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC) Head Farm Manager I is responsible for directing and planning farm operations and food plant program activities at assigned ADC facilities. This position is governed by state and federal laws, agency/institution policy and procedures.

Typical Functions:

Supervises a small to medium-sized staff of skilled craftsmen and administrative support personnel; interviews applicants and recommends hirings, approves leave, makes work assignments, evaluates the work performance of incumbents, and trains employees. Ensures compliance with existing state and federal laws, regulations, and guidelines for agriculture and food processing plants. Directs the operation and maintenance of farm equipment; determines areas for inmate labor and supervises inmate squads during various work activities. Serves on classification committee; assists with selecting low risk security inmates to perform selected jobs, and practices security measures at all times. May select crop varieties, determine number of acres to plant, direct the preparation of soil, the planting of seeds, and the cultivating and harvesting of crops; maintain acreage through crop rotation and selection, and apply proper chemicals to control diseases, weeds, and insects. May prepare annual farm operationâââ€ÂšÃƒÃ‚‚¬ÃƒÃ‚ƒÃƒ‚¢ÃƒÃ‚¢Ãƒ‚€Ã‚žÃƒÃ‚‚¢s budget; monitor expenditures; write farm equipment specifications and orders farm equipment, chemicals, fertilizers, seeds, etc. May assist with price estimates and the selling of agriculture products. Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Knowledge of agricultural and/or industrial food plant management. Knowledge of supervisory practices and techniques. Knowledge of various types of farm equipment and uses. Knowledge of various farm equipment used in agricultural and food plant processing. Ability to plan, organize, and oversee the work of subordinates. Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate farm operations. Ability to prepare specifications for purchasing equipment and supplies. Ability to prepare and present oral and written information and reports.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, agriculture business, or a related field; plus four years of experience in agriculture or plant management, including one year in a supervisory or leadership capacity. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
