ASP Corporal

The ASP Corporal serves as an experienced officer responsible for providing leadership, guidance, and operational support to patrol officers, investigators, and specialized units. As a first-line supervisor, the Corporal assists in training, mentoring, and overseeing junior officers while ensuring compliance with department policies and procedures.

Typical Functions:

Conduct routine and targeted patrols to enforce laws and ensure public safety. Respond to emergency calls, crimes in progress, accidents, and disturbances. Oversee and assist with arrests, searches, interrogations, and evidence collection. Provide backup and tactical support during critical incidents. Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, department policies, and procedural guidelines. Mentor and assist new officers, field training officers (FTOs), and specialized unit members. Provide on-the-job training in de-escalation, defensive tactics, and investigative techniques. Monitor officer performance and provide coaching to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Assist with roll call briefings, operational debriefings, and tactical response planning. Act as a liaison between officers and command staff, ensuring clear communication. Lead response efforts for high-risk situations, including active crimes, pursuits, and major incidents. Secure and maintain crime scenes, ensuring proper documentation and evidence handling. Assist in coordinating emergency response efforts with other agencies and first responders. Serve as an acting supervisor in the absence of a Sergeant or higher-ranking officer. Participate in crime prevention programs, outreach initiatives, and public safety education. Mediate community disputes and provide conflict resolution strategies. Represent the agency at public meetings, school programs, and local events. Review and complete incident reports, arrest documents, and use-of-force reports. Assist in maintaining department records, case files, and operational reports. Conduct preliminary investigations into complaints, officer conduct, and internal issues. Ensure compliance with legal standards, policies, and department procedures.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Strong knowledge of criminal law, patrol tactics, and investigative techniques. Proficiency in crime scene management, report writing, and evidence documentation. Ability to assess threats, analyze intelligence, and implement tactical responses. Knowledge of law enforcement technology, data systems, and reporting tools. Excellent communication and negotiation skills for working with agencies, officials, and the public. Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques. Ability to work well in crisis conditions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum of seven and a half years of law enforcement experience as an ASP Trooper and/or ASP Trooper First Class.

Required Certificates:

Must be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer by the State of Arkansas in accordance with ACA 12-9-106. Must possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
