Bill to rename state department gets OK

– Michael R. Wickline, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

The Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee on Thursday advanced a bill that would change the name of the state Department of Transformation and Shared Services to the state Department of Shared Administrative Services.

In a voice vote, the committee sent Senate Bill 147 by Sen. Jim Dotson, R-Bentonville, to the Senate.

The state Department of Transformation and Shared Services was created as part of then-Gov. Asa Hutchinson’s reorganization of 42 executive branch agencies into 15 departments in 2019, said Department of Transformation and Shared Services Secretary Leslie Fisken.

Changing the department’s name to the state Department of Shared Administrative Services is more representative of what the department does, she said. The state Department of Transformation and Shared Services includes the Arkansas Geographic Information Systems Office, the Division of Building Authority, the Division of Information Systems, the Employee Benefits Division, the Office of Personnel Management, Arkansas State Surplus and the Office of State Procurement, according to its website.

If enacted into law, SB147 would become effective July 1, 2025.
